Let's Talk Hair: Five Reasons the Short Film 'Becoming Neicy' is Important

Updated: Sep 1, 2022

Hair and the products that maintain it account for $13,310.6 million dollars already in 2022. Countless celebrities have been created on social media platforms because of their escapades with hair. Remember Tessica Brown? If you don’t know her by that name, maybe you know her by the Gorilla Glue girl?

Since the beginning of time, a woman’s hair has been considered her crowning glory. Hair defines how a woman moves or merely exists in our society. What if you did not have it? Could you imagine your life without it? People who have never experienced hair loss or Alopecia often say, “It’s just hair”. I could go on and on, but here are the five reasons why this film is important.

1. Representation. According to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, 6.8 million people in the United States have or will develop alopecia. There are many people out there who would like to see true representations of themselves in film.

2. A new era. Many things are accepted into today’s society that never would have been considered years ago. The idea that people can choose their own pronouns is a new construct. Transgender rights are not something people would have entertained, but now it has tremendous traction. Now, it is time for people with alopecia to be seen as attractive and healthy individuals. It is important to release the negative stigma attached to hair loss.

3. Diversity. This film features a diverse cast. People from a variety of backgrounds are represented in all aspects of production.

4. Authenticity. The actress selected for the role of Bernice, the protagonist with alopecia, lives with alopecia herself.

5. Save the arts. Art often imitates life. Many people will never be exposed to the plights of others if they never experience different forms of art. Less art means less input on the problems in our society. This leaves us vulnerable to a less inclusive society.

Now you know why the short film “Becoming Neicy” is important. You can support the film by telling everyone you know about it and sharing the link to this article.
